Math Is Everywhere!
Instead of thinking of math as something that we only do at school, be sure to point out how we use math every day
In the kitchen:
Following a recipe, measuring out ingredients, doubling a recipe for a bigger crowd, cutting it in half for a smaller one
At the store:
Keeping to a budget amount, adding grocery costs as you shop (hand off a calculator and keep little hands busy), finding sale prices, using coupons, remembering tax
At a restaurant:
Have your child add up the bill before the waiter/waitress hands you the bill, including tax, figuring out the tip
Around the house:
Finding area and perimeter of a room, rug, bed, rearranging house plans, creating your own blue prints with graph paper for your bedroom, figuring out how many gallons of paint to buy to cover your walls, planting a garden- how much dirt to buy, mowing the lawn- how many passes will it take for the lawnmower to mow the backyard.
Taking a trip:
How long will it take to drive to Spokane? How much gas will it take if we drive the minivan? If I want to go to Seattle using the train- when will I have to leave and when will I arrive? What will it cost our family of four to fly to Disneyland and stay five days? While in the car, play number games: Add or multiply #’s on license plates, count red, blue, black cars
Time:
Practice telling time, and figuring out how much time has passed. How many minutes until our favorite TV show?
Games:
Play games together: cards, rummy, Monopoly, chess, checkers, Uno, Battleship, Yahtzee, Dominoes, Connect Four, Chinese Checkers, Backgammon, Tic Tac Toe, Life, cribbage, puzzles, etc.
Sports:
keep track of scores and statistics from your favorite teams. If your kids play sports, have them figure out their batting averages or yardage run.
Most importantly- Keep a positive attitude.
Instead of saying “I was never good in math.” Say, “Let’s try to figure this out together.”
Or ,“You can help me have a better attitude about math and teach me!”
